"To perform or not to perform?" That is the question.

Dear Friends,

Below is the link to an article that I wrote for the March 2007 issue of Musifax (publication of the Quebec Music Teachers' Association). It is about whether teachers should insist that their students participate in concert performances, and whether whether adults and children should be treated differently with regard to performances.

Interesting DVD and Book by Alan Fraser

Dear Friends and Musical Colleagues,

I would like to introduce you to an interesting DVD on piano technique:

http://www.alanfraser.net/dvd.html

I find Fraser's DVD to be interesting in the sense that he illustrates piano technique in a way that takes into account the scientific, physiological as well as the aesthetics of piano playing. Fraser was a student of Philip Cohen (my mentor) - so some of the techniques presented in the DVD is also based on Cohen's earlier approaches to the piano.

Here is his book - with the same title:

The Craft of Piano Playing

RCM Examinations (2007 January Session)

Dear Fellow Colleagues and Students,

I just returned from my RCM examination adjudication this season. It was again a wonderful experience to be able to sample the playing of over 150 candidates in the region of Unionville and Markham. Everyone worked hard, including myself - and I hope that the feedback I provided to candidates serve to encourage them, as well as help them reflect upon their experiences in examination preparation, and performance.

I have encountered some very young individuals attempting relatively high grades as well. It was fun to hear them play advanced pieces, when they still had some difficulties struggling to jump onto the piano bench. There were other little ones who brought their footstools as well. Everyone was generally well prepared, which made the experience rewarding and fun.

The weather was so cold, that I fell sick on the fourth day of the examination. Fortunately, I had a strong immune system, and recovered the next day. I stayed for 3 more days in Toronto, visiting with family and friends, and it was so much fun to explore the Chinese malls (e.g. Pacific Mall) and visit the mega Chinese grocery stores. I stocked up so much goodies - which are not available in Montreal. People living in Toronto are so lucky, as all kinds of foods are easily accessible. I wish Montreal would have the same diversity and choices in foods. Anyhow, I had a great time in Toronto this season, and I look forward to more to come.

Cheers
